A Blatant Attempt to Steal an Election

Most of you have no doubt heard about the GOP-backed initiative cleverly called the “Presidential Election Reform Act.” It will likely be on the ballot next year with the goal of splitting California’s presidential electoral votes.

Sounds fair, right? Maybe on the surface. But it doesn’t take much digging to find the true intent of this initiative: it’s a bold attempt by the Republican party to hold onto the White House through sleight-of-hand.

Let me be clear: this is an attempt to sway the electoral system in a politically motivated manner. Whether you like the current system or not, it was created on purpose to be balanced and fair. And the claim that offering one electoral vote per congressional district would bring presidential candidates to California is laughable: our state’s districts are just as firmly partisan as the rest of the country.

So what would we be left with? A system that awards Republicans with electoral votes in California (a blue state) but leaves red states like Texas firmly in the traditional winner-takes-all camp. Even if you argue that the Electoral College is antiquated, you don’t fix it by changing how just one state votes.

It’s a blatant attempt to steal an election.

If you look closely at who pays for the upcoming media campaign, I guarantee it will be funded by large, out-of-state advocacy groups. Conservative talking heads see how the mood on the street has shifted away from the GOP and they’re doing everything they can to plug the holes in their rapidly crumbling dike.
